Just a summary, I am 84 years of age, retired in July 2013 and settled down to promoting the dangers of bacterial meningitis, which killed my beloved son, Mike in 2009. My wife, Charlotte, and I embarked on an adventure of live aboard cruising, aboard a large Blue Water motor yacht. While our beginning was rather fraught with hurdles, we continued to look forward to the day we moved aboard the Misty Lady and cruise the eastern seaboard and associated waterways. After more than four years of life aboard this Bluewater Motor Yacht, I developed an advanced problem due to interaction with medications and experienced rather frightening balance problems. Therefore, getting on and off the yacht was fraught with danger of falling between the docks and the boat's hull. Walking the docks was also problematic considering that our yacht club docks were all floating docks and my balance problem was a danger during the walk from our yacht's docking slip to the clubhouse or out to the DC Wharf facilities and our car housed in the yacht club's reserved garage. SO, we had to regretfully put the Misty Lady up for sale and move back on shore. We moved on shore, first into a condo apartment in Alexandria, then after two years there, we relocated to the city of Newport News, in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. Our original desired location was in the city of Hampton, Virginia, which is the oldest English-speaking settlement in the United States having been established originally in 1610. My ancestors came to this country through this settlement in the mid 1600s and lived in that area for around 100 years before beginning a migration of one portion of our family toward the west.
I looked forward to moving back to this area and exploring the roots of my family, both maternal and paternal ancestry, but we found a great house in the Newport News area and became ensconced in the terrific neighborhood of Kiln Creek. My wife, being still actively employed, received a substantial offer in a position with a government contractor firm back up in Northern Virginia. So we put the Newport News house up for sale, receiving and accepting an offer withing two days. We then relocated back up to the city of Alexandria and into another high rise condo. My wife reached a point where considerations for retirement were becoming very important. She indicated that she really didn't want to retire in Alexandria, so once again we began a house search in the Tidewater area, this time in the City of Williamsburg and in a community restricted to 55+ age owners. We found the ideal location, initiated the sale and closing for our retirement home. We then put our condo on the market. Alas, the market was not as robust as before so we had to change asking price a couple of time, but finally the Alexandria Condo was sold. Now we are set to enjoy the great locations found here in the Tidewater/Hampton Roads area, considering that we are history buffs and there are literally hundreds of historical sites in this segment of our nation. Of course living in Williamsburg is the epitome of history living life.
So, now we are in our retirement home, in a great retirement type community. A great clubhouse with a fine dining restaurant, a grill/pub, an award winning PGA designed golf course and miles of walking trails. Looking forward to my wife's eventual full retirement and the two of us visiting all up and down the east coast historical spots.
Yesterday, I had an appointment with an Oncologist! This was be the initial appointment since a set of tests over the past few weeks have determined that the cancer cells in my prostate have spread to the other areas of my body. My urology professional team and I had hoped mightily that the small level of cancer showing in the prostate would remain just another item to watch out for in my aging 82 year old body. Turns out we were wrong. Now it is going to be up to both my urology folks and my new Cancer specialists.
As some may know, back in December of 2022, when my wife and I were living in the Newport News/Hampton area of Virginia, I had a malignant tumor removed from my bladder. The urology/oncology physician determined that the entire tumor had been removed. He also discussed with me, during a subsequent follow-up to that surgery, the aspect of “shaving” or trimming the prostate gland in my abdomen. It had been diagnosed as being enlarged a couple of years prior to this and I had been taking medicine to reduce its size making my urethra more open. My wife and I had already made plans to relocate back up to Alexandria, VA because she had received a terrific offer with a company back up here, and had put our Newport News home on the market. Thankfully the first day of being on the RE market, we received several offers. We selected one and accepted the offer. I informed my Newport News area urology/oncology doctor of this and we agreed that as soon as we were settled into a home in Alexandria I would contact a urologist and have the prostate procedure performed.
Once we had completed the closing process on our new high rise condo apartment, I contacted my previous Primary Care Physician at the Virginia Hospital Physicians Group. He had been my PCP for more than 10 years before our relocation to Newport News and he was the first contact I made after we got our personal effects in our new Alexandria home. My PCP referred me to a VHC urologist and my first visit was scheduled. We determined that the prostate “shave” surgery should be performed very soon. The prostate surgery was performed by the Virginia Hospital Physicians Group Urology specialist on April 19, 2023. Lab analysis of the shaving samples from my prostate discovered the presence of cancer in the prostate. While it was a small amount, we felt that it was simply a case of monitoring to ensure that it would not spread in the prostate or elsewhere. Several months later, in October, a decision was made to test for the Cancer’s status using a PET scan test. Results of that PET scan caused the medical folks to schedule a biopsy of my lymph nodes to confirm the results found in that earlier scan. Turned out, the Cancer has spread from my prostate into other areas of my body and was found in those lymph nodes. I was informed of this status and an appointment with the Virginia Cancer Specialists organization was made for yesterday, November 30th.
I met with the Oncologist who would be in charge of my Cancer treatment plans. There were some tests performed and blood draws were taken. Turns out that the Blood Draw will be a regular event throughout the treatment process to monitor the red and white blood cells and other indicators, oh joy! Hate those blood draws.
Medications, both oral and injection were identified by the Oncologist and two other appointments were made with my new Oncology Team of professionals in this organization. One for palliative care and another for genetic evaluation; can my children be faced with the same type of cancer? Orders were placed for the specialized cancer medication, and another member of my new “team” will be responsible for interface with my insurance and my Medicare people. As they put it, the plan is to keep my focus on fighting this cancer and they will take care of the other things.
So, it seems this old man has hit another roadblock and now faces the aspect of the dreaded word CANCER. My father and one of my brothers died from Cancer so I just figured that this is perhaps a bit of Hodges male curse. I don’t plan on just rolling over and waiting for the Cancer to kill me through. With this great group of Cancer specialists, and my regular team of medical professionals in the Virginia Hospital Physicians Group, I hold great hope and confidence that we will put up a good strong fight and hopefully win this battle.
More on this as things progress. Just want to keep my cyber friends (primarily males because this is a male type of cancer), aware of prostate cancer’s danger and hope that they take lessons from this to keep awareness and evaluative testing to ensure that they catch any semblance of this disease in the early stage. Don’t ignore the danger, Prostate Cancer can be a horrible invasion, and in many cases a harsh end of life. I feel confident in my team of medical experts and specialists and do believe that this old curmudgeon will be around for quite a bit longer.
Last night’s election in various locales brought some interesting and well deserved results. Especially in my beloved state of Virginia. But appears that the “PEOPLE” struck back at the efforts of the politicians, propagandists, dark money PACs and billionaires and of course the fascist-leaning Christian Nationalist like the new House Speaker. Calm and clear heads in many of the competitive elections cast their ballots to retain our democracy and individual rights.
Especially here in Virginia where ALL of the Legislature’s seats were up for grabs. I was particularly concerned that evening as I readied for bed, but the belief in our Democratic Republic’s concerned voters came through with flying colors. I awoke to find that the Republicans had lost the House majority and the Democrats were now in charge of both the houses of our Virginia legislature. We were able now to stop the Youngkin Administration and the Republican legislators from further damaging our school system with made up crises for implementing book banning, true history of our Commonwealth and the USA, and implement a religious tone to the promotion of collegiate information/topics. Plus the right of women to make their own decisions along with their physicians regarding the health and well being of their bodies and in keeping the government and religious fanatics out of their faces. Problems were rampant in those items and the invasion of the rabid right wing Moms for Liberty terror groups were defeated in school board elections across our state.
SO, we survived another assault by having true interested citizens who stood up to the tyranny of the Republican Fascism/Christian Nationalism and showed the entire nation that Virginians still stood for individual rights and the historical definition of freedom in the Old Dominion Virginia.
Makes me proud once again of my home town and home state.
In the history of our country several attempts to provide a better, more inclusive health care system has been approached or presented for consideration and political action. Each time the corporation interests have blunted and blocked the process through the Congressional representatives who are dependent on these corporate interests for political contributions. Universal Health Care is the standard in the rest of the developed world. With the Exception of the United States, full, comprehensive and excellent outcomes have become accepted as the norm in all of the other developed nations. Except us!
The United States is said to be the wealthiest nation in the world and that is probably true. However, it is not a situation that is all encompassing of our citizenry. Those at the upper reaches of our society are wealthy beyond imagining while those at the lower reaches struggle daily to feed, house and clothe their families. While I am unsure of the status at this point, a couple of years ago it was stated that over 30% of the people in this country were either uninsured or underinsured. They struggled mightily to keep their families healthy and it is a failing struggle for many. Many of the so called “working poor” were in jobs that provided no benefit what so ever, save a pitiful wage which in most cases failed to provide the necessities of life requiring both parents to work setting up the need for daily child care at exorbitant costs. One company was noted for pushing its employees to apply for state or federal programs rather than providing a benefit package themselves. This company at that time was recognized as the largest retail corporation in the country and its owners were worth billions of dollars each. They inherited this wealth by the way, from the efforts of their paternal ancestor.
A large segment of the regular working public had a bare minimal level of health insurance, which in the majority of instances was not much better than none at all. People had to forego treatment, medication and proper diets due to the vagaries of their work/life environment. I recall vividly the case reported in our local newspaper, of a young boy who died without proper care of an abscessed tooth which cause the infection to spread into his brain and causing his death. His mother was employed in a minimal wage job with no benefits and they could not afford proper dental care nor health care. Had this family lived in Canada, Great Britain, France, Germany, etc. that young boy would have received proper care in a timely and appropriate manner. He would still be alive today!
In truth, thousands of Americans die each year due to a lack of access to health care and all because of our broken health care system.
In 2003, a Congressman from Michigan put forth in the 110th Congress a Bill labeled HR-676 that called for the establishment of a universal health care plan that would be a single payer system and replacing the current commercial, private, profit centered health insurance industry. Under this bill, every resident of the United States would receive a single health card that would be presented to their health provider for treatment or consultation. This card would also be used to acquire necessary medical equipment, respiratory equipment, prescription medications, dental and hearing treatment and implements. There would be no requirement or demand for payment at the point of service. There would be no limitation on work or other status so workers were not going to be locked to an employer because of their health insurance plans and not worry about losing health insurance if they changed jobs. This program, under the HR-676 bill would allow for access to any recognized health care professional, health care facility, or prescriptive/pharmaceutical source.
The Corporate Health Care Insurers and others in the profit taking areas of our health care environment would be restricted from offering services that were included in this program. Only those medical treatments or procedures that were cosmetic or individualistic in nature and specifically not covered under the HR-676 program could be offered by the corporations selling insurance. Of course this stirred up the hornets nest of the profit making corporations who were bringing in billions each year in profits through unreasonable denials and the most egregious was over billings. It has been posited that under the current programs put forth by the for profit health insurance providers, Medicare has seen overbilling in the amount of more than 140 billion dollars each year. These are taxpayer dollars that are going into the pockets and bank accounts of the insurance executives and the major shareholder’s bank accounts. Billions of dollars that could have been used to provide better health outcomes for the residents, men, women, and children of our United States.
This old man is assembling some supporting documentation from respected sources and over the coming editions of this blog series will submit this data for the evaluation of American Residents and families of our broken and corrupt health care industry. We are also exploring the construction of a web site dedicated to this UHC need.
One of the most intelligent and competent people I have ever had the privilege of knowing was a woman who didn’t present herself as anything but a good worker and team player during our initial interview conversation. Her resume included some outstanding previous engagements, but she didn’t act like the brilliant aerospace engineer that she truly was as evidenced by her past work experiences.
After a few weeks on our project team she began to display capabilities and insight indicating that she had more knowledge and intelligence regarding the work we were doing than any of the others on our small design team. Over a period of almost a year, I was increasingly impressed by her statements in response to questions during our project technical meetings. However, it was only when she was directly referenced or queried, did she speak up and display her intelligence about our project and demonstrate her professional capability.
During the early weeks with this woman on this project, my major focus was on trying to determine why she was not more forthcoming. We had several conferences regarding her work and her personal attitudes. I wanted to move her into a position of more responsibility, as a project lead or project manager, but was hesitant to put her into a position where she might be more pressured. It finally came to light that she had experienced a considerable amount of covert and overt discrimination and denigrating comments (mansplaining and others) during her college years and in her early work place assignments. So we focused on improving her confidence and interaction familiarity with the other members of our group. That began to show significant promise as she began to see how the other engineering folks accepted and encouraged her in both her work activity as well as inviting her into their off work pastimes.
Once she was more comfortable within our crew, and many counseling sessions between the two of us, she began to show more, do more and impress the entire team with her outstanding capabilities. Gradually she shed her protective walls and became more interactive and outgoing. Her forced introvert personality was overcome and replaced by the truly excellent personality that she had kept hidden.
When our project hit snags, she was the first person to start the processes to determine potential solutions and to worked with the team to implement those solutions. She was always ready to share and support the other team members when situations arose. And the other engineers responded positively.
She was finally displaying a more confident demeanor, was recognized by the executives in our company with excellence awards, and financial awards for her suggestions of effective/efficient process modifications. It became obvious to me that she had moved on forward from her reticence earlier and was a strong candidate for upward promotion. We moved her into a team lead position and by the time our multi year program was completed, she had moved into a Project Manager and then a Program Manager position, my old position since I had been promoted to Division level just before my retirement.
Now in my retirement years, I recall the people who I had the honor of working with and managing. I will often take to my computer and access those special forums for our professional environment to follow along with some of my former team mates. It gives me great pleasure to see examples that this woman has continued to grow in her own way to enhance and expand her ability and her self confidence. Considering that she was now in an executive position and a presenter of technological interests for large audiences she had definitely come a long way from when she first interviewed for an aerospace engineering position with our company. And it was obvious that she had learned to:
How does one truly judge the answer to that question. One way is to ask yourself are you content in your life so far? Have you contributed in a positive way to our society? Is your family happy with you?
Well, I think everyone would think that there might be some instance in their life that they would like to have done differently. I know I had times in my younger days when I may not have been as compassionate with some of my acquaintances as I should have. Surely most of us have had a time in their past life where they did or did not do something that now they would love to change that instance? Frankly the determination of a well lived life is both personal and external. From your own image of yourself and that of those close to you and over your life. Are you respected, loved, and admired? Surely most of us would aspire to those attributes in our life. We all should strive to have the respect of our peers and family, and hope that at the end of our time on this old planet, we will be missed.
Overall, throughout my long life, I believe and do hope, that I have been a reasonably decent member of our human society. I served my country in our military (US Air Force) and wore that uniform proudly. I have been a reasonably successful worker/employee, senior manager, business person, husband and father.
I am father to three wonderful persons who as kids were responsible, were active in their schools, academically as well as sports activities. They did not indulge in activities that would cause a trip to the police station for their dad or mom. All in all, my three children were very good kids growing up and became solid compassionate and responsible adults with strong situation awareness.
My daughter was my first born child, she is a strong and competent person who attended college and university while holding down a full time position. She attained her Associates, Bachelors and Masters degrees all while fully employed. She now is a senior manager for a major corporation, owns her home and makes her old father so very proud of the strong woman she has become.
My middle child, my eldest son, died at the age of 44 from Meningococcal Disease (Bacterial Meningitis). He was a person who made friends quickly, was a good judge of character and person, made friends of many and those friends were lifelong. At his celebration of life, following his passing, over 250 of his friends and his family attended. He was an amazing athlete, attending university on a football scholarship, he excelled in golf and loved that game with a passion. So when he died, we held an annual golf classic for several years in his memory, with the funds being collected to the benefit a national association for Meningitis awareness. He was truly loved by many people and we mourn his loss every day, even now.
My youngest son is the father of four daughters, my angelic grand daughters. Two daughters are from his first marriage and the two younger daughters from his second, current marriage. They are all thoughtful, compassionate and caring women, strong in their bearing, and respectful of their parents, grand parents and other people in their circle of life. This son was injured in a work related accident over 25 years ago and his injury was such that he was determined to be fully disabled, but he is a strong personality, takes his disability and constant pain as a fact of life and soldiers on. He is strong in his faith and active in his church community. He loves his four daughters with a true father’s pride and awe, they are his shinning lights and his reason for being, in his mind. He loves and adores his wonderful wife and they evidence a wonderful caring relationship.
My wife is also a strong woman and of whom I love and am extremely proud. She is not only my wife, but my life partner and best friend. She has grown in her person from a relatively shy, retiring sort of person, to a nationally recognized expert in her profession. She conducts seminars and subject matter presentations to large audiences in various locations around the nation, she conducts regular educational instructive classes to assist others in their efforts to attain their professional certification. She has many papers and essays published in the trade journals of her professional field. And she is a constant helpmate for me as I age and grow less mobile.
So, now it comes down to me personally, and yes I am pretty satisfied with how my life has progressed. Of course there were some hiccups and bumps in the road. Some wrong decisions about my career path, an oversight in ignoring a financial investment opportunity that in looking back would have caused me to become a very wealthy person, but alas such is life. Still in all, a good life with some significant successes to look back on, When I contemplate where I came from in life, my beautiful family, how I lived and worked, and where I am today, I can feel that yes, it has certainly been a live well lived.
So, what about you? A life well lived at this point?
Sure I have had birthday celebrations with family and friends and each time the celebration shouted about another year of life ending and a new year beginning. So far, I have been having birthdays for 82 years and in a few months will again celebrate that time and turning 83!
I hear folks continue to discuss the capability of our current president, Joseph Biden and the fact that he is over 80 years and should retire after his current term in office. They say that he is too old to run for re-election to the presidential office of our country. Well, I don’t think Joe is too old, hell I am his age and I have no problem making decisions of worth, nor do I feel that I am past the point of being a contributor to our society of Americans.
But, some folks have their opinions and I have mine. Mine being based on the actual fact that I am Joe Biden’s age and don’t feel that my abilities have gone south. I continue my efforts in the information technology field, not gainfully employed but active on a personal satisfaction stage. Oh sure, I have the aches and pains that come with an aging body, but my mind is still sharp, I still concentrate and foster ideas. I can still drive my automobile, although I can’t ride a bicycle (but then I wasn’t EVER very good at riding a bicycle) but I can still take walks, remain mobile in various ways, and can still use my electronic gadgets like my computers, my Fire electronic books, and of course the always there mobile phone.
Ageism is a form of discrimination and it is rather clearly imposed by those folks who express their unhappy feelings about the age of our President. I don’t feel that way, because I have always been a person who looks at achievement and works rather protestations of their goals, ideas and other speechifying claptrap. I have seen men and women in their 20s to 40s who performed marvelous works of science, business, politics, and above all, compassion, and have witnessed those same age groups founder in their efforts, dismiss entire segments of our population and make a mess of their environment. By the same token, I have witnessed the same actions and attributes with men and women in their 50s through 80s. So spare me the idiocy of using ageism to determine whether a person is qualified to run for any political office. Having said that, I would also expect people in positions of responsibility to recognize when it is time for their departure.
I also would point out that many are those who live very long lives and are productive along the way. My ancestry included a great, great, great grandmother who didn’t know how old she was, but from her relating her life experiences, we estimated her age at between 98 and 113, most probably 110. A key factor in our computation of her birth was that she remembered the “march of death” which we ascribed to part of the later years of the forced migration now described as the Trail of Tears. I was a child of 10 years when she passed. She was a child of the Cherokee nation, during the forced migration of her people from Georgia to Oklahoma by the then government of the United States. Her parents left the march at late night somewhere in today’s Arkansas and eventually settled in the Northwestern Louisiana and Eastern Texas region. There she was married to a Texas farmer/rancher who had migrated from Virginia and settled in what is now the ArkLaTeX area where Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana borders meet.
Their marriage was the beginnings of our family (my maternal family). The main memory I have of that lady was that even though she had outlived her own children, she was still mobile and active in her life. She lived, after their lands were lost, with a succession of grand children, eventually with my grandfather. Still worked in her garden, still “put up” canned foods for the winter or other hard times. She saw much of our country’s history, and would relate those points in “stories” to us children. She saw three major wars, from the Civil War, World War I and World War II. She lived through the Great Depression, and the prosperity following the war times. She was there when the automobile was invented, lived without electricity, indoor plumbing and plowed their land using mules and a hand held plowshare.
She was cognizant of her surroundings for her entire life, and had the ability to care for herself right up until two years before her passing. She died in 1951 and the world was lessened by her leaving. And as old as she was, there was never any doubt of her cognitive ability. Woe betide anyone who made out that she was OLD and INFIRM.
One of the most productive and instructive people I have ever known was a man who was a Systems Engineer and an adjunct professor of computer science. He held positions in the design of business applications into his late 70s and taught his computer science classes into his early 80s. He was a team lead/project manager in a company where I once worked and I audited some of his classes in the computer sciences. He was always available for telephone conversations even following his final retirement at 86. He would consult with us and other development teams and provide insight and directional focus for many projects that I worked on or that my peers worked. I spent many evenings in discussions with him regarding some of the systems functions we were attempting to design and build. He made a mean, delicious cup of coffee and laughed readily, and had a whimsical sense of humor. He passed at 89 from complications from a fall and just days before he had participated in a teleconference call helping to develop a functional design document for a new automation system in the financial area. So, spare me all this talk about being too old to be productive.
If Joe Biden actually stays as the Democratic Presidential candidate, he will certainly have my vote because he has done an excellent job as President so far contrary to the misinformation from the right wingers and today’s corporate owned news media.
We may be older, but that doesn’t necessarily mean we are no longer of value or are mentally competent.
This short essay will include a reference and link to a TED talk presentation regarding climate change and the destruction it is causing to our world. Sure, I know there are some who say that Climate Change is a hoax, these same people believe in a flat earth conspiracy, that the 911 was a government plot and they also voted and still support Donald J. Trump. So what does that tell you about their cognitive reasoning ability?
The facts are that our world is rapidly moving into harms way by the roadblocks placed upon correction by individuals, corporations, and other organizations whose focus is on profitability and power. Evidence of this danger is seen quite frequently by extreme weather patterns, stronger hurricane storms, more violent storm systems, extreme heat and cold seasons than in the past decades.
The validity of the climate change position is bolstered by the entire scientific community. They have consistently provided proof of the impact on our climate from these sources, yet far too many influencers are working constantly to blunt or reverse any gains we have toward correcting our harmful change to our climate and the warming of the atmosphere as a whole.
What are the Roadblocks
Two major Roadblocks to saving our world from the devastation of continued climate change are primary in the continued adverse weather conditions. First of these is the fossil fuel industry as a whole.
Fossil Fuel Industry
A recent TED presentation pointed out just how dangerous the fossil fuel industry is to the life on this planet. I will post a link to this TED Talk for anyone who is interested, later in this essay. But for now, understand that the fossil fuel industry is not your friend when it comes to discussions and actions regarding the climate change that is slamming this old world constantly.
One simply needs to review history of our supposed fuel availability impacts spread over the past few years. I personally can date my initial exposure to the perfidy of the oil and gas industry to the early 1970’s. Perhaps you might recall this as well? Yeah, probably not, considering that I am well over 80 and the mid seventy period was an early time of my adult life. Back in that time, most of our cars were either 8 or 6 cylinders, and their gas mileage was not that great, somewhere between 14 and 20 MPG, the upper was if you had one of the economy cars of the day. Anyway, at the start of this fuel crisis, gasoline was selling in the neighborhood of between 30 and 50 cents per gallon. Suddenly we had a “fuel crisis” because of the “Saudi Arabian Boycott” that occurred in the 70’s. Of course the major oil and gas companies and their propaganda organization the American Petroleum Institute (API) were the ones who gave the news media that information, so you can judge the accuracy of the notification. Gasoline became hard to get, the fuel restrictions established at that time was that you could only purchase gas on the odd or even number that compared to the last digit on your license plate. If the day was like 3 or 7 you were allowed to buy gas if the last number of your license was odd, likewise if the day was a 2 or 4 or 8 and your license had an even number. Gas shot up from that low price into over 1,00 reaching 1.50 at one point. Then after a few weeks, and long, very long lines at all the gas stations, the seething anger by the driving public at the long wait AND the high escalated pricing, the oil and gas folks declared that the Saudi Arabian government had seen the light and the crisis was ending!!! yea for us. Gas then began to drop by pennies over time. Finally the price at the pump, for regular, was at 95 cents, then it rose again to 1.35, finally dropping to 1.25 and hanging right there. Of course that was the price point that the oil and gas executives had marked at the beginning of the fuel “crisis”.
Another major oil crisis happened again in 2010 when gas prices for regular gas shot up to almost 6 dollars a gallon. That is the crisis that got me to thinking of a way to break my dependence on a bunch of money grubbing, corrupt men in executive office suites in places like Houston, Texas and New York City. At that time or course the hybrid vehicles were on the market and those were the only options to the normal offerings of Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) cars and trucks. So, I traded in my Buick sedan and my GMC midsized SUV for two hybrid vehicles. Those two cars reduced my gasoline outlay and dependence on the fuel industry by somewhere near 60%. But I was still stuck with having to buy gas at the oil and gas company’s manipulated prices. Crises continued to occur, but the intervening ones, between the 70s and the 2010 pretend crisis were minor, with fairly smaller increases in the pump price of a gallon. By that time, my wife and I had adjusted our lives to the reality of the perfidy of the oil and gas folks and went back to our GM cars. But the vehicles has considerably lowered cost of operation due to a far more efficient fuel usage during normal operations.
But, then came the pandemic of 2021 and the start shortly thereafter of the Russian attacks and invasions of their neighbor, the sovereign nation of Ukraine. Never one to allow a good cover excuse to go by, suddenly we were in another gas crisis and pump prices began that ever increasing rise in price, reaching the 6+ dollar per gallon in many places and between mid 4 and mid 5 dollar prices elsewhere. Again we had the price gouging activity of the oil barons reaching into our pockets and stealing again. Oh the industry, their “market experts” and the compliant news media all claimed it was the world wide market impacts. But frankly, we should have already recognized it was one more made up fuel crisis and the price manipulation activity by the fossil fuel industry.
However, this travesty continues today, because the oil companies believe that they have the motoring public brainwashed over the so called market impacts that the prices are still rising and falling, often changing prices more than once in a single DAY! They allowed the prices to drop from their 4, 5 and 6 dollar levels down to the low three dollar range, often hitting just over the 3.00 per gallon, usually around 3.15 or 3.25 dollars.
Well here we are into 2023 and not far from 2024, and these paragons of honor (I jest), in Houston, NYC and other locales for fossil fuel company headquarters, have continued to play games with pump prices. Just this past week, (Oct 7-10)I watched prices ranging from 3.699 to one Shell station that posted a fuel price of 4.259 a gallon for REGULAR fuel. WOW, and they continue to get away with that crap.
All the while, our Congress plays stupid political games, attempting to divert the voting public’s attention from their corrupt refusal to consider or act on legislation to benefit the nation and it’s people. And those who are totally owned by the oil and gas folks on the right side of the Congress (yes the once honorable Republican Party), simply deposit those big checks from Exxon, Mobil, Shell, and of course the American Petroleum Institute (API) the propaganda and lobby bunch. Of course the media has their hands out to reap those millions of dollars in “advertising” purchases from those same fossil fuel company executive class thugs.
So, what is the answer folks? Trust that the oil and gas folks will play nice and stop the ripoff of the public from their manipulation of gas and diesel prices? Sure, and pigs fly! Nope, don’t know about you folks, but this old codger has had enough and will be buying a new GM Electric Vehicle when the models I am interested in are ready for purchase. Right at this time, looking at the Equinox from Chevrolet due out in the fall and all models in the early Spring of next year. If I get sufficient information from GM about the small Buick SUV line, might even wait for those to be released. But when the full line of the Chevy Equinox product is ready, so will I be.
Financial Blocks
The financial industry presents another roadblock against the driving public, including the major banking groups, the Wall Street Firms and other interests in high finance. These companies, provide lucrative loans to the fossil fuel corporations and they do not want to see more movement toward mitigation of our climate change, global warming, or any other impacts on the fossil fuel industry clients, because it impacts their revenue generation. Banks and investment management firms providing billions of dollars in loans and other beneficial packages to the fossil fuel companies and they earn billions of dollars in profits from the revenues generated by those same companies.
So What can we do?
Perform an evaluation of the growing electric vehicle vehicles that might suit your requirements. These new technology cars and trucks are becoming more and more feasible to offset the highly polluting Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) powered cars. GM, Ford and Chrysler (Stellantis) along with other major manufacturers are moving into the EV market area with GM focusing heavily into this new area. Their Chevy Bolt was, for several years, the leader in the lower cost EV market. These cars provided a viable alternative to the high priced EVs that were available. This year (2023) GM made a major notification of their intentions regarding the EV market. With their new battery/power base, they indicated that the Bolt would continue after all, just revamped to use the new Ultium Platform. The company would also be releasing the Chevy Equinox EV small suv in late 2023 and early 2024 which would be priced in the more affordable range, starting at 30,000. The Bolts which were priced starting in the mid 20k range would continue in those price points with the new 2024 version of this popular EV.
Along with GM, the other of the Big Three are also making commitments to the EV market. Look for new affordable offerings from these manufacturers that will be targeting the average American driver/purchaser. These American offerings will be met by the international manufacturers from Germany, England, Korea and Japan.
This presentation from the TED Countdown Conference in July of 2023 is a good source of the problems with the Climate Change Roadblocks. Al Gore is the speaker, but his data come from the scientific community including the top climate scientists of the world.
The recent (October 3, 2023) ouster of the House Speaker, was a clear departure from the history of our legislative house membership. Never in our history has a Speaker of the House been removed from his position. NEVER! Yes, the rogue rabid right wing fascists, headed up by Matt Gaetz (of course from the fascist Florida cabal), voted to remove Kevin McCarthy from his role as Speaker of the House. His Crime? Simply working in a bipartisan way to conduct business of the United States Congressional House. Oh Horrors.
Understand, folks, I am not defending McCarthy, I have always believed that he was a lying, morally deficient, anti-democracy slug that for some reason the folks in his district continued to hold their noses since 2006 and put that scum sucking pig back into office. BUT, and I stress this strongly, removing the Speaker of the House in this manner is totally opposite from the operational environment of our House in all of our history as the oldest continuing democracy. Yet with morality and decency in the Republican Party at such a low state it is not surprising, disappointing and shameful, but not surprising.
To compound the horror of this idiotic action by the far right members of the GQP, the forerunner candidates for the next Speaker are two of the most undeserving of such a role of authority. Jim Jordan and Steve Scalise are the primary candidates identified so far. And supposedly they are going to be establishing the slate of candidates then having the actual vote for a new Speaker on Tuesday October 10, and Wednesday October 11 for the actual vote. To point out just how horrible this current Republican group is, there is even talk of letting that corrupt, criminal, multiple indicted thug Trump compete for Speaker.
Supposedly the Speaker doesn’t even have to be an elected Representative. I find that difficult to comprehend, that an unelected man or woman could actually be installed as the most important official of the majority party of the House.
But, stupider things have been showing up in our government, especially the House and the Supreme Court.
Jim Jordan has done nothing in his tenure as a House Representative in the entire time from his first election in 2006. He has posted no legislation, contributed no legislative support and has only participated in the House deliberations by being an antagonistic, witness harassing and insulting, bomb throwing, roadblock for the House and the national legislative process. He has been a caustic, insulting, insufferable jerk in the entire time he has been drawing that six figure congressional salary having been returned by those people in Ohio who must have held their nose each election. Otherwise, I cannot imagine why any thinking person would consider this ass as a representative of our people and our rule of legislative actions and financial responsibility.
Steve Scalise is another right winger hoping for enough votes to sully the Speaker position again. I have no detail information to cause my animosity for Scalise, other than his membership in the multiple rabid right wing groups whose sole focus it to keep the Republicans from doing any damn thing to benefit the American Citizenry. Nothing. Having been born and partly raised in Louisiana, and who still has some family members in that state, I have been aware of the machinations of the Right Wing Louisiana Corrupt Politicians and Scalise is right there among that group. I still communicate with some of my relatives in Louisiana (admittedly not many of them, due to strong political and theological differences), but those I do continue to communicate with are not pleased with their right wing political hacks with Scalise at the top of that bunch. His actions in the Congress, while not as bombastic as Jordan, Green, Boebert, and the others in that group of idiots, he still shows his rabid right wing credentials every time he speaks to the press or news media. Of course, he is in the majority of instances, simply parroting the bull shit lies and anti-individual rights put forth by the fascist propaganda mill of the Republican party and their publicity mediums, like Fox and NewsMax.
The last thing this congress needs is another knuckle dragging right wing fascist in the Speaker’s office. But that is what we will more than likely see coming out of this proceedings on Wednesday October 11th.
Simply put folks, just another example of the total destruction of a once honorable political party. I would imagine that the likes of Dwight Eisenhower and that honorable group of former Republicans are turning over in their respective burial plots. Obviously this group of thugs, especially those such as Gaetz, Buck, Biggs, Mace, Good, etc. have no intention or even the capability of governing for this nation. They are among the most vicious of the rabid right wing fascists who were elected to the office of Congressional Representative. And elected for their local election districts by voters who evidently were not practicing situational awareness, or were of the same mindset as those vicious dishonorable cretins they sent to congress and are paid by national taxpayers.
While I strongly suspected that the ouster of McCarthy would likely happen, and Gaetz made no attempt to hide intentions, considering his lack of honor and integrity during his entire time of squatting in the People’s House. And his years of suckling off the taxpayer teats for publicity and money he doesn’t deserve. It was certainly assumed by this old curmudgeon that he would be the asshole who would file the documentation to call for the ouster. This is the same dishonorable scum who has been described as a sexual predator but has, as our multi-tiered judicial system and our corporate news media often does, escaped proper arrest, trial, sentencing and incarceration. Yet this vile creature continues to sit in the once honorable House of Representatives, drawing his six figure salary and doing not a single damn thing for the United States and it’s citizens. And it should be noted that those “honorable, moderate Republicans” haven’t done a damn thing about censoring or even expelling these insulting, vile and vicious people from the people’s Congress. But such is the posture of a significant majority of the Republican Party political cult. While the media continues to mention a group of Republicans who are moderate and not bomb throwers like Jordan and the Gaetz schoolyard bullies, I have yet to witness a single action by these so called moderates that would blunt the fascist degradation of the once decent Republican Party. It is now more representative of historical autocracies, fascist dictatorships, or theocratic inhuman regimes. Sadly so.
Those members of the current Republican fascist group, who countenance violence, vicious verbal assaults, and supporting of the lies and propaganda, are very similar to the Brownshirts and para’s active during the beginnings of the Hitlerian dictatorship of 1930s Germany. And in that comparison, the multitudes of German citizens, who continued to turn a blind eye to the destruction of their country and the subjugation of certain types of citizens! Just like our present right wing American citizens who are also turning a blind eye, OR are actively promoting the destruction of the United States of America and the democracy fostered by the founding citizens at our earliest beginnings. The movement of the Republican Party since the end of the Eisenhower administration has been enhanced by the likes of several of the follow-on Republican presidents who allowed, encouraged and enacted the rise of the current Republican Fascist Cult. One of the key decisions by a president to foster this current right wing environment, was Ronald Reagan who gutted the Fairness Doctrine. This action led to the rabid rabble rousing, lying propaganda spewing likes of Rush Limbaugh, Fox News Channel, NewsMax, and the rest of those propaganda mills. See, Donald Trump, as vile a human as he is, was simply the personification of the destruction of the Party by the right wing Christo-Fascist individuals who preached the violence, and ant-democracy actions evolving into the current political abomination.
Can we survive the growing trend toward a ChristoFascist autocratic regimes? Yes, we can! We are stronger than this, folks. We have had tens of thousands of our young men and women who stood up and suffered injury and death, fighting against the Fascist Regimes in the 40s and to defend the American way of life. We have also seen countless millions who have stood strong with political actions and voting to defend the U.S. citizens for the long life of our American individual rights and our society based on the ideals of democracy. We, the People, will hopefully continue to act for our protection from the fascist, theocratic horrors that the right wing Republicans would have us be exposed to. All at the behest of the uber-wealthy and the mega corporate titans.
We Are Better Than This, People. Stop with the head in the sand crap, get off your couch, and stand up for America, for democracy, for individual freedom from the theocratic fascist dictatorships the Republicans and the wealthy want to impose on our country.
Otherwise, we will see a rise of a Fifth Reich in our nation, and there will be no Allied Forces around to save us from our stupidity!
Yeah, yeah, I hear you, we have a democratic republic not a democracy, but frankly we have both. Our political governance is based on a democratic republic. But our society focuses on democracy for all its citizens. At least it used to. Seems like we are going more toward a ChristoFascist autocracy each year and we don’t seem to recognize the danger inherent in this shift of our society and our government.
We still have options but if we don’t take the initiative and stand up for our system of governance, we will likely soon find ourselves being ruled by a new Republican version of 1930’s Germany and our minority populations, including racial, ideological and faith based subjected to the same discrimination and incarceration as the Jews, Romany, and others who were not of a make up as determined appropriate by the ChristoFascist dictator and the ruling junta minions.
Think I’m kidding? Perhaps simply deluded? Oh how I wish! But this old man has been closely observing our political incursions from the right wing on a regular basis for a couple of decades now. I have watched the Republican Party devolve from a reasonably moderate group of people who wanted the best cooperative solutions for our country and our people, to the current state of being a racist, authoritarian, fascist oriented organization whose sole ideology is focused on the accumulation of power and nothing else.
There has been no legislative program from the Republican Party to benefit the citizens of this country, UNLESS they happen to be white, wealthy and powerfully supportive. Simply look at the legislation that has been put forth in our Congressional houses in the past several years. Now look at the generating, supporting, and vote to pass organization. Other than tax breaks for corporations and the wealthy, what legislation has the Republican Party passed? No, not the tax break of 2017, that was simply another give away to the rich and powerful and to the corporate executives who actually own the Republicans.
Now there are some who would say I am being far to harsh in my condemnation of the Republicans and their MAGA minions. To this I reply, I am harsh, I don’t suffer fools gladly and those who would do harm to my country and my fellow citizens. I am not a media type poster, I am simply an old American veteran and worker who has been on all sides of the society we have had in previous years in our nation. I write this blog for my own pleasures, not for a group of subscribers or anywhere near that state. IF someone should stumble across my posts, happens to actually read them, I of course welcome their comments or opinions. I write what I believe to be truth, this is based on research, reading all manner of news sources, and considering those essays or papers of people I have found to be of great respect, integrity in their writing, and who have gained a level of prominence in the world of humanity for their dedication to fact and truth across the board.
We have become a permanent campaign country over the past years and it would seem that our political class will continue to have election campaigns continuously year in and year out all the while soliciting and accruing millions of dollars from the public and more insidiously from the large wealthy donors and corporations lobby groups. At this point, we have just finished a set of primary elections and in November will have another election for offices less than the Presidential. This of course will be then followed by the Presidential and Congressional election cycle for 2024 and once done, the entire cycle will begin once more. All the while, the general public becomes more exhausted from constant campaigns, on television, on social media, and of course through email lists established by unscrupulous means and sold/resold to various organizations, mainly political but also by con artists and identity thieves.
It would be so very nice if we could transition to an election system like in Great Britain or Europe where campaigns are restricted to a few weeks or months prior to the actual election. Also in many of those areas, elections are public funded, no corporate, wealthy, or even everyday citizen contributions. So therefore, undue influence of the rich, powerful or corporate can’t be involved. We at one time had a restriction on electoral contributions and corporations were not allowed to provide campaign funding at all. Then the “Supreme Court” decided that corporations were citizens with the same rights, SERIOUSLY??? So Amazon, GM, Exxon, et al have the same rights that I as a voting, taxpaying human citizen does? Bull shit! In the first place, very little tax revenue comes from corporations or the uber wealthy. Sure I hear all the crap propaganda about how the rich pay the most in taxes, but I still call bullshit on that. Show me the tax returns of Musk, Bezos, Gates, Zuckerberg, Trump, etc. All wealthy and tax avoiding men and women. Consider the heirs of the Walton empire, how much of a percentage in taxable wealth do you actually believe is paid into our national treasury? ZILCH, Bupkes, absolutely minimal dollars if any at all, comes from these super wealthy people and the corporations? Hell, Exxon, Shell and the rest of the oil and gas criminals reap tax grants and rebates by the billions each year. And they still screw the public at the gas pump by screwing with the prices.
So spare me the validity of that idiotic Supreme Court decision, the corporate world does not and damn sure should never have the same rights monetarily and electorally as John Q Public in our political system. Frankly, corporations should never be considered as viable participants in the electoral process in this country. They spend millions in paying for lobbying firms and bribe our elected officials sufficiently in their offices, so they should be happy with that level of graft and corruption and stay the hell out of our electoral system.
I hear from a lot of folks who claim various people, events, or groups are responsible for the
high gas prices. Well, I have been around for a few decades, have driven
thousands upon thousands of miles and buying gasoline from every single company
putting the gas pumps out there. Those gas purchases include in the Middle
East, Europe, and the Far East nations in addition to the majority of our
United States of America. So, this essay/commentary is based on true
experiences of my more than 8 decades of life.
Who bears actual responsibility?
I can tell you for a fact, that the president of the United States (every
one of them since the invention of the internal combustion engine) IS NOT
responsible for the high prices of gasoline in this country. The market has a
small impact on price. The congress is partially responsible, mainly through
their corrupt inactions that enable/assist the actual responsible parties. But
even Congress is not totally at fault, they are simply the enablers of those
who are truly the evildoers behind the gas price gouging.
One needs to look no further than the corporate offices of companies like
Exxon, Shell, Conoco, BP, Valero, etc. These people have been manipulating the
price of gasoline and diesel at the pump for decades and they are not going to
stop until or unless Congress passes some sort of law regulating price gouging.
Which, so far, the Republicans in Congress have blocked every legislative bill that has been
put forth in this regard.
Not manipulating, because law reflecting some activity like that has been
around for years and no one enforces it at all, period. More corrupt practices
from our political class and the corporate class of super wealthy corporations
that focuses on the rape and pillage of the working people in this nation will
continue unabated and it will continue to do so as long as we have corrupted
political hacks and immoral corporate executives.
Other income through theft
And consider that these selfsame oil and gas barons working with their wholly owned politicians have been stealing taxpayer dollars through congressionally allowed, supposed Research and Development GRANTS and tax abatements to the tune of billions of tax dollars each year. Then they increase the level of theft by not paying the royalties to both the government and the native American tribes for the oil and gas they drill and extract from lands belonging to the public and to the Native American tribes for drilling wells on the Reservation lands. Over the decades, these companies have been guilty of avoiding these royalty payments and as a result their profits and stockholder payments have been obscenely large, much more so than if they had used integrity in their business dealings.
However, as one who has actually worked in that industry and for those executives, as an outside technology consultant, I can say pretty darn firmly, that integrity, honor, and honest dealings are not part of their make-up.
Gasoline versus Diesel
This manipulation of fuel prices spans decades and across various types of fuel. For instance, they charge an exorbitant price for a gallon of diesel fuel when the cost for refining a gallon of diesel fuel is far less than gasoline. This quote from a question to the various resources shows this difference.
“Diesel fuel is heavier and less volatile than gasoline, which makes it simpler to refine from crude oil. As a result, diesel tends to be cheaper than gasoline in most countries around the world ” But not in the USA.
“Both gasoline and diesel fuel are produced from crude oil and therefore the cost of crude oil is the main factor influencing gasoline and diesel prices. However, fuel prices also reflect refining costs, taxes, and distribution and marketing costs. Additionally, retail prices are affected by market demand. These factors lead to a price spread between gasoline and diesel.Refining costs: During the process of refining, crude oil is separated into different components and these components are converted through further treatments into gasoline, diesel fuel, and other petroleum products. Diesel fuel is heavier and less volatile than gasoline, which makes it simpler to refine from crude oil. As a result, diesel tends to be cheaper than gasoline in most countries around the world. However, the introduction of Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) between 2006 and 2010 increased diesel production costs since ULSD requires more refining. But not sufficient to justify the actual gap in prices between diesel and gasoline.”
These comments were extracted from publications of various organizations who follow, monitor and report on the oil and gas industry. The facts are that in this country, diesel is well above the gasoline prices at the pump. These same price structures are prevalent at marina fuel pumps where the fuel pumped is for motors in boats of various sizes. Whether gasoline or diesel, marine fuel is a major rip-off, because it is the same price or higher as for cars and trucks on the highways, and I know that my old motor yacht never touched a highway. The idiocy is that the same highway taxes are applied to marine fuels as for fuels in automobiles driving on those highways.
One thing I noted with almost every single report of this type is that the authors are hesitant to point to the executive manipulation of the cost/price relationship. I can understand their reluctance, since much of their work is highly dependent on these same executives allowing them access to many items of their research. However, the facts remain that in the oil and gas industry, the senior executive level are very powerful, they have exorbitant amounts of money for lobbyists, and their demands as a result, are treated as coming from the absolute mandate for operations.
Price Gouging, Jacking up the base prices
I have suffered through at least three instances in my driving life of the oil and gas companies manipulating the price of gas to move their desired base price point to a higher level. They dramatically increase the fuel prices blaming some “catastrophic happening” usually quite higher than their desired point price. Then they magically allow the price to float down slowly until their price point is reached. By then the driving public has been convinced the higher prices were necessary, but lordy, lordy, how nice and great these gas companies are for bringing the costs back down.
A prime example is in the early 70’s when the fuel companies convinced us that the Saudi Arabians had put a boycott on selling oil to us. What they didn’t admit to is their negotiation with this oil nation to perform this fallacy and then they would reap the increased price for their barrel of crude oil when the “crisis” is resolved!
I recall waiting in long lines to purchase gasoline for my car when the last number of my license plate was either odd or even. I got the honor of paying three times the price for a gallon of gasoline as I had before this “crisis”. Then after a few weeks, the cost at the pump started to slowly drop. When it reached the price point of 1.25, a miracle of miracles happened and the fuel crisis was over, no more odd and even buy days, and plenty of gasoline was available.
Strange thing, some similar crises occurred a few years later when the price of gasoline soared to 5 dollars a gallon! That is when I sold my GM cars and bought two Toyota hybrid vehicles to save on fuel. Yep, even though I knew it was a made-up crisis, I still was trying to break free of total subjugation to the Oil Barons and their need to increase their salaries, their bonuses, and some increase for the stock prices. BTW, I went back to my GM vehicles after a couple of years.
Well whoops, here we go again, in 2020 when they manipulated the price at the pump again!!! This time it was the Covid Pandemic AND the invasion of the Ukraine nation by the Russian hordes. Well, well, fuel prices soared again to the 5 dollar and even beyond in some areas. Price gouging anyone? Of course, and it was rampant. Then the master manipulators in Houston and elsewhere (oil and gas corporation HQs.), played a yoyo game, lowering the price, then jacking it back up, but not quite as far as before. Now lower, but rise again, not quite as high, lower again, raise again. Starting to get the picture now?
Driving Public needs to act
Hells Bells folks, time for the driving public to all grow a pair, hammer our congress critters over their delicate spot (their congressional seat, their access to bribe money, and their POWER). They need to understand that the driving public has gained some knowledge of the cons that the oil and gas companies are pulling, that they know about the price gouging, and that the members of congress are doing not a single damn thing to put a stop to the rape and pillage of our nation’s citizens.
Will we do it? See the first instance of this price manipulation and price gouging that I remember was in the 70’s for gosh sake, that was well over 50 years ago. And this time they are truly kicking our slats out, this fuel “crisis” is affecting most aspects of our daily lives. The supply chain depends on transportation of goods, fuel prices dictate the adverse pricing of goods and service. When the trucker fills up his transport vehicle paying an ungodly sum for that fuel fill up (150 gallons usually) you can bet that we will pay the price at the cash register when we buy things. So, I truly wonder if we will ever put fire to the feet of the politicians and the oil barons. Make congress stop their taxpayer money handing over in grants to these very wealthy companies. Make Congress pass enforceable laws/regulations that will stop or at least hinder the oil barons playing games with our lives and enriching themselves with billions of dollars.
Or we can just sit back, let the propagandists make us believe that the high fuel prices are the presidential administration’s fault or because of the war and or the foreign oil countries, or a plethora of other external things.
Sure, and Santa Clause will ride again on Christmas.
